“Internet for development is still in its infancy”

Three questions to Juan Fernández Gonzalez, former WSA expert Cuba

Imagine World Summit Award was a tree. The outstanding content-producers were the water that runs through its roots. Its branches were made of the network of eminent experts from all UN countries. They nominate the best digital products in their countries for WSA and WSA-mobile. Juan Fernández Gonzalez, advisor to the Ministry of Informatics and Communications in Cuba, shares his experience.

Juan Fernandez Gonzalez You used to be WSA Expert for Cuba. What made you support the contest?

Gonzalez: Regarding the Internet and its impact the WSA is one of the best ideas ever. Internet has a lot to do with content and its creation. To select and recognize the best content by experts in their respective countries is crucial. Many of the content developers do not work for profit. The WSA gives them an opportunity to be in the limelight. Why not award them for their hard work?

Why is it so important to stress the content issue?

Gonzalez: I think that content is the fuel for the engine, which is the Internet. Trying to select excellent content is one of the objectives of the WSA. The award is fantastic to improve content and highlight its usefulness for the Internet.

What do you think is the specific role of the Internet to achieve the MDGs?

Gonzalez: We are closely related to the Internet and sometimes tend to exaggerate its importance. Certainly we shall not diminish its impact. The potential of the internet for development issues is still in its infancy. In order to harness many processes still need to be identified and better understood.
