Join the WSA Winners Events in Cairo

The symbolic significance speaks for itself: WSA brings its winners to the heart of a powerful and young digital movement.
From April 26th to April 29th 2012 the WSA Winners Event will take place in Cairo.

After having to postpone the Winners Events due to political turmoil to 2012, the highlight of the global WSA contest, the Winners Events, can finally take place in Cairo. From over 460 projects and 105 countries the WSA Grand Jury selected 40 WSA Winners in 2011.

WSA will celebrate the best e-content producers worldwide in cooperation with the international trade fair Cairo ICT 2012 and the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) under the patronage of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology H.E. Mohamed Salem. The cooperation between these four players guarantees high level audience and best networking options for winners, the Egyptian internet community and international guests. World Summit Award goes mobile again in 2012

Seeking and promoting excellence in mobile content

Apps that help autists communicate that show the next elevator to handicapped people or avoid traffic jams were among the winners of WSA-mobile 2010. Together with the other WSA-mobile awardees these projects demonstrate the great potential of quality content for smartphones, tablets and other portable devices. In 2012 WSA-mobile, supported by key partner Abu Dhabi Systems & Information Centre (ADSIC), starts its second edition with an exclamation mark.

Olé! WSA-mobile Kick-Off in Barcelona
WSA-mobile starts its second global contest lap in the eye of the cyclone:
at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. From 27 February to 1 March 2012 more than 60.000 CEOs, developers, journalists and stakeholders from the mobile branch will meet up at the world’s biggest event for the mobile industry.

National Experts seek mobile superstars: WSA-mobile registration phase
To ensure high quality applications the WSA-mobile network of international experts organizes national pre-selections. Each national expert nominates and submits the eight best projects from his/her country to the global contest: one submission in each of the eight categories. The WSA-mobile database will be open to nominations from May to July 2012.

Selecting digital diamonds: WSA-mobile Grand Jury meeting in Abu Dhabi
The WSA-mobile Grand Jury 2012 will meet in Abu Dhabi from Sept. 9th – 13th. The WSA-mobile Board of directors is in charge of to appointing an experienced and gender reflected jury. In November 2011 Christian Bauer, technology expert and former WSA project manager, presented best practice examples from WSA Winners at "The Second International ICT Conference on E-Applications in Developing Countries" (ICEA 2011) in Khartoum.

Between 27th and 29th November the capital of Khartoum united practitioners, academics and industry professionals to develop ideas and solutions regarding ICT in developing countries.

Christian Bauer presented the Winners of the World Summit Award (WSA), World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) and World Summit Award Mobile (WSA-mobile) through multimedia installations. Sudan's WSA representative Noureldien Abdelrahman from the University of Science and Technology in Omdurman said: "It was logistically challenging to build such a large base of installations. However, with this road show we now reach many of the ICT-students in the greater Khartoum area."

For Bauer the trip to Khartoum was “a great pleasure”. He had the chance to showcase “wonderful projects that help bridging the digital divide and to establish a relationship of knowledge exchange between WSA and ICEA”.

ICT-professionals from Lithuania, Somalia, Nepal, Morocco and Senegal join WSA

During her studies Ieva concentrated on Lithuania‘s state strategy for information society development. After university she worked for the Lithuanian Government and was responsible for the Information Society Development Committee under the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Additionally Ieva edited and translated works of Manuel Castells into Lithunanian. Ieva is writing for various magazines and is member of the group of specialists on online services and democracy (MM-S-OD) that prepairs draft legislation for the Council of Europe.

WSA ambassador in Sudan Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim, Somalia

Mohamed is founding chairman of ISOC Somalia and advisor to Somalia's Minister of Post and Telecommunications, the Chairman of the Centre for Research and Dialogue, and Somalia's IGF. Mohamed has engaged in the IT industry for two decades.
He worked at PNG Elcom, the Kuwait Oil Company and in the public sector. As IT strategy Manager at Deakin University Mohamed was contracted to re-establish and modernize the Somalian registry, which has only been active since June 2010. Mohamed leads a number of important development projects.
Mr. Dhruba
Sapkota, Nepal
Dhruba works as a journalist and news reporter for the Government of Nepal.

He studied law and history.
Mr. Yassir Lamrani, Morocco
Yassir is media director and board member of Casanet. Yassir was responsible of launching the first mobile services in Morocco.
Ms. Haneen S.
Al-Rashid, Jordan
Haneen works for the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. She coordinated the national Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) in cooperation with Microsoft.
Mr. Alex Corenthin, Senegal

Alex is president of ISOC Senegal and is responsible for the registration of Internet domains in his country. He used to be an expert for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of France and acts as ICT expert in Senegal for international organisations such as UNESCO or ITU.

Looking back: WSA around the world

Backstage the WSA and WSA-mobile project team, based in Austria, was busy in establishing ties and organizing outreach for the global awards in 2011. Besides the WSA Grand Jury in Hong Kong in April 2011, WSA attended the WSIS Forum in Geneva, the Future Media Forum in Moscow, and the Internet Governance Forum in Nairobi.

→ Between the 16th and 20th of May 2011 international stakeholders met at the WSIS Forum 2011 to update each other about Freedom of the Internet, Internet Governance and Access in their countries. WSA Chairman Peter A. Bruck represented Austria and the WSA Winners from 2011.

→ At the Future Media Forum in June 2011 in Moscow, initiated by RIA Novosti, WSA Chairman Peter A. Bruck held speeches alongside prominent members of the WSA network such as Alfredo Ronchi, Catherine Warren, Dorothy K. Gordon, Manar Alhashash, Ralph Simon, Tomi Ahonen and Wilfried Rütten.

→ Between 27th and 30th of September WSA attended the Internet Governance Forum in Nairobi, Kenya. Peter A. Bruck used the opportunity and showcased WSA-mobile winners like the Consumer Reports Mobile Shopper App in the workshop “Building Trust Environment for e-Commerce Challenges and Innovation”.
